Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, better known as Anthony Hope (9 February 1863 – 8 July 1933), was an English novelist and playwright. He was a prolific writer, especially of adventure novels but he is remembered best for only two books The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau (1898). These works, "minor classics" of English literature, are set in the contemporaneous fictional country of Ruritania and spawned the genre known as Ruritanian romance.Zenda has inspired many adaptations, most notably the 1937 Hollywood movie of the same name. Hope wrote 32 volumes of fiction over the course of his lifetime and he had a large popular following. In 1896 he published The Chronicles of Count Antonio, followed in 1897 by a tale of adventure set on a Greek island, entitled Phroso. He went on a publicity tour of the United States in late 1897, during which he impressed a New York Times reporter as being somewhat like Rudolf Rassendyll a well-dressed Englishman with a hearty laugh, a soldierly attitude, a dry sense of humour, "quiet, easy manners," and an air of shrewdness.

not as good as Prisoner of Zenda, but still a good story.would have been so much better if he could have been semi-honest about sex, but as a popular writer in his time, with many young people among his audience, Hope (who wrote for the money) had to pretend that his Sophy lived through all her adventures as a virgin
Hope could never be honest about sex. only in Zenda did the story work fully, because given those unique circumstances it was perfectly credible that his hero would not lay a hand on Princess Flavia
in this story, it is just timidity on the author's part
he also missed a good chance by not having her lead her mountaineers to the capital for a victory lap at the end, and THEN maybe withdraw in the face of Austrian intervention
would have made a more satisfying climax
but I still enjoyed it
a reminder of what the world lost of the wonderful old scenes in eastern Europe, destroyed by two World Wars
his Kravonia is a cross between Slovenia and Montenegro

Sophy of Kravonia Anthony Hope 9781523464289 Books Reviews
not to everyone's taste, but if you know some Victorian-era history, the story of how an orphan servant girl becomes briefly queen of a small Balkan state, is well done and even credible. a fun read. only major weakness was the author's inability to be honest about the heroine's love life
Most interesting with lots of twists.
